This book was interesting to compare with modern day "Pin Ups" aka Sports illustrated. I have purchased pin up calenders for my hubbys garage in the past as I think they are kind of funny. Not something I would normally ready but a quick fun history lesson. This was and interesting flip through book. If you love pin-ups, then this book is for you.more As it stands, many of the pages in this book are redundant.Īpart from these drawbacks (doubles and unnecessary photos), the drawings in this book are truly inspirational. Instead of giving us multiple versions of the same drawings, the editor should have stuck with choosing only the best version of each drawing. Although on the surface these doubles are scans of different magazine covers, they feature the exact same drawings and you really have to focus to spot any difference. Secondly, there are a lot of doubles in this book.

Although the photos are the "real things", they don't even hold a candle to the drawings and I would much have preferred a full book of just pin-up drawings, even if it meant the book would have ended up half the size. Having purchased a book with a drawn pin-up on the cover, I also expect to get a book of drawn pin-ups and not amateur girls posing for amateur lads in really awkward poses. I'm sure those have their admirers as well, but then they should have ended up in a separate book with a different cover. This book features hundreds of fantastic reproductions of classic pin-up magazine covers. Like I said, I love the book but it could be so much better and my peeves are too great to give it that 5th star. What drives me most batty about this book is that it isn't properly formatted for the page size, and most images are cut off around the edges, obliterating a lot of text. I'll also mention that the magazines featured in this book were all produced by the same man so it's pretty much all the same stuff it would've been great to have pin up magazines from other creators/publishers. It's predominantly cover images with some features from within the magazines that are quite fun and 'socially risque' by todays standards, but they're great and I wish there was far more of them. These magazines would have had an amazing array of quirky advertisements so why are we seeing the same ones here? There's quite a bit of duplication elsewhere in the book in multiple identical images of advertisements. It's interesting to see how much of the art was reused across multiple volumes of the magazines but I don't want to keep seeing the same pics. Holy moly, 1000 pin-up girls, complete with plenty of duplicates. These magazines would have had an amazing array of quirky advertisements so why are we seeing This is a pretty fantastic collection and I quite love this book but I can't give it 5 stars.
